Ribena Review

Ribena is a British brand of fruit-based soft drink and fruit drink concentrate produced by GlaxoSmithKline. The original and best known variety contains real blackcurrant juice and the brand name comes from the botanical name Ribes, the genus to which the blackcurrant belongs. Ribena was originally manufactured by HW Carter as a blackcurrant squash, then the drink was launched in 1936 under the name Ribena and marketed as a drink high in vitamin C, which was encouraged by the Government at the time, in fact from 1942, almost the entire British blackcurrant crop was made into blackcurrant syrup and distributed to the nation's children for free (but without the Ribena brand name), giving rise to the lasting popularity of blackcurrant flavourings in the UK. Production moved to the new Royal Forest Factory in the Forest of Dean in 1947, where production still takes place today. Ribena was bought out by the Beecham company in 1955, which later became SmithKline Beecham and then GlaxoSmithKline. But in 2013, Ribena along with Lucozade was put up for sale by GlaxoSmithKline, industry analysts say that the deal could reach £1 billion if a buyer can be found.
